Our Venue Story: The Journey to SKY Armory

Every story has a beginning, and for SKY Armory, it began in 1996 with a woman named Nicole Samolis. Leaving behind a career in retail management, Nicole stepped into the world of event planning, founding The Events Company. For years, she traveled across Central New York, the United States, and even Mexico, orchestrating celebrations in barns, tents, and unique venues. With each event, Nicole honed her craft, learning what made moments unforgettable and what could be improved. She developed a reputation for transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences, always attentive to the smallest details that make an event truly personal.

In 2003, Nicole’s husband, Kevin, joined her venture. Together, they dreamed bigger, imagining a place where their vision could truly take shape—a home base for events. That dream led them to a historic building in downtown Syracuse: the former Wells & Coverly Department Store.

The building had long been a cornerstone of the city’s retail scene, known for its quality and elegance. Though years of wear had left the space in need of care, Nicole and Kevin saw beyond its faded walls. They envisioned a venue that would honor the building’s history while creating a modern, sophisticated space for celebrations.

They gutted the structure, expanded the back to create a modern entry atrium, and transformed it into a stunning venue in the heart of Armory Square. The renovation preserved the charm of the original architecture—the soaring ceilings, brick walls, and classic details—while adding light-filled event spaces designed to accommodate weddings, corporate gatherings, and special occasions. October 2014 marked the grand opening of SKY Armory. What had once been a mobile planning company became a destination. Here, clients found not just a venue, but a partner in their celebration.

Nicole often says that the design of SKY Armory was inspired by the frustrations she encountered at other venues. Every detail was intentional: service that feels personal, food made from scratch, thoughtfully curated wine and craft beer, and décor that elevates every occasion.

The transformation from The Events Company to SKY Armory was more than a physical change. It was the start of a new chapter, one that allowed Nicole and Kevin to assemble a team as talented as their vision. Today, event planner Lisa and assistant planner Emma bring ideas to life with the same dedication Nicole instilled decades ago. Their culinary team crafts inventive, flavorful dishes that leave lasting impressions. The staff’s passion for design, service, and cuisine ensures that each event is not only beautiful but also deeply memorable. Guests often remark on the way SKY Armory feels intimate despite its grandeur, a reflection of the care poured into every detail.
